Mindfulness for What Our Students Need #BCSLearns

In a blog post called See Me. Know Me. Grow Me. Katie Martin, as the title suggests, shares three things that students want from their teachers.  Martin outlines these three things in her post with three simple, yet powerful, questions students ask of their teachers.

  • Do you see me?
    • “Have you taken the time to get to know the person as an individual?  Do you know what they are interested in? What do they value or care about?”
  • Do you know me?
    • “Can you name the strengths of this individual? Do you know what success they have had?  What drives them?”
  • Will you grow me?
    • “Do you know their personal goals or aspirations?  How is your support connected to who they are and their goals? What resources, pathways, or experiences are the best fit for this learner?”

In the classic movie, Dead Poets Society, Mr. Keating, the English teacher played by Robin Williams, asks the class for an assignment to compose an original poem and share it in front of the class.  Check out this 4-minute scene from the film and see if Mr. Keating demonstrates seeing, knowing and growing his students.  Does he see and know them as individuals well enough to help grow them as learners knowing when to support, when to press, and when to move on?  What do you think?
